Reasons for Using a Personal Debt Relief Program
Taking part in a personal debt relief program may be necessary for consumers who have suddenly realized that they are buried in a mountain of debt. Oftentimes, this is composed of various credit card debts and other unsecured loans that carry much higher interest rates compared to a secured loan. The debt relief program may utilize one or more of three possible debt reduction strategies and is often handled by a certain type of debt settlement company.
The first personal debt relief strategy is known as debt consolidation and the purpose is to substantially reduce the interest burden of the borrower. In some cases, the debtor may be able to get back on track through the simple technique of reducing the monthly amounts submitted to pay down the debt.
The second strategy is used when the total amount of debt accumulated has become too large and it has become impossible for the borrower to come up with the amount being collected. The debt settlement company will then negotiate with the credit card company to determine the possibility of paying a certain percentage of the amount due while the rest of the debt will be forgiven. This is possible if the loan company realizes that the borrower is financially incapable of completely repaying the loan. Instead of collecting nothing in the event that the debtor files for bankruptcy, the credit card company would be willing to accept the payment of a portion of the amount that is due.
Lastly, a debtor can obtain a government grant as a way to obtain personal debt relief. However, it should be realized that the government’s intention is to encourage the development of small businesses. Thus, this route may be much more difficult because of the many requirements and because you will need to prove that you are setting up a small business.
