What kind of musical instruments produce sound readily associated with gloom and sorrow?

When these instruments play, you know that the mood is sad, melancholic and sorrowful. I’m rearranging some music, and employing such would improve the atmosphere of the music. I know harps are one of them. What are the others?

Cello for sure. I always use it to score sad parts of films, yet I find it’s sounds to be beautiful.

    I think the violin is one of the most emotional instruments. It can produce sounds that could make me cry! There are some beautiful pieces of music that use the violin to portray sadness.

    I think the harmonica can sometimes sound quite sad

    Bagpipes…………..I always get chills despite the melody.
