Fil-Am Vets Rondalla

What is the acceleration of the ballons and the instruments?

Part 1-
The instruments attached to a weather balloon in the figure below have a mass(m) of 4.7 kg. The balloon is released and exerts an upward force(F) of 103 N on the instruments.

Part 2-
After the balloon has accelerated for 10 s, the instruments are released. What is the velocity of the instruments at the moment of their release?

Part 3-
What net force acts on the instruments after their release?

Net force upward is 103N-4.7kg*9.8= 56.95N
Ignoring increasing drag with speed
F=MA, so A = F/M = 56.95/5.7 = 10 m/s^2 (rounded slightly)
for 10 seconds yields velocity of 100 m/s
force after release is the weight 4.7*9.8 = 46.06N
