I disagree. There is no gene for “musical genius” but there is a personality types people can be born with for muscians/artists/writers, a genius has this personality type, and was set to work on their craft usually at a young age.

There are also personality type genes for people who think logically like Mathematicians/scientists, and another for those who are great at sports.

You make a similar point to my father (a mathematician) who thinks Good Will Hunting is a garbage story. But in this movie I think there are some redeeming qualities:

1) They don’t pretend that this was real. It is just for the sake of a story.

2) Mozart’s wife says that all he does is work on music all day (very different from Good Will Hunting.)

Beyond your problem with the presentation of the nature of genius, I actually like this movie.

This movie was absolute . It traduced the legacy of Mozart. Genius is something you work at and this did not come through in the film. It belongs in the same dungheap as Good Will Hunting where that nonsense is put out that you can do something great just by having a great intellect. It takes work! And this crappy movie is a foul insult to Mozart. What else would you expect though of Forman and his compadres whose only objective was a quick mental fix and lots of money? Fik them!

With all due respect. Genius is god given (or whatever… natural) the realization of that requires work. Paul Erdos counted in primes at age 2. No matter how hard one works, without immense natural genius, they will not be Newton. Genius is not something you work hard for. You either are or you aren’t. Your work dictates what you do with it.

OK. I have been to …
OK. I have been to hard on the flik. Just as long as we recognize that it is a fantasy of the scripwriter (was it Paddy Chayevsky?). I like the movie for its wonderful shots of Prague and the Estates Theatre. I also found the sections where Salieri is hearing the music while he reads it to be original and entertaining. I simply wanted to underline that genius is something you work hard for. You don’t simply take dictation. I hope the next Mozart movie is more balanced.
