I'm a pianist, so I'm obviously biased, but I think that the piano is a great first instrument. It teaches you to read both treble and bass clefs, which sets you up for most instruments (except instruments like the viola that have their own clef); it's the easiest instrument to learn music theory (since everything is laid out very visually); and if you ever do decide to learn to sing, basic piano skills are indispensable. Also, it rocks! :-)
References :
Guitar you would need lessons however I'm going to learn guitar next year through a high school elective but I don't think you want to wait till you're 16 like me.

I would highly recommend piano because it's a pretty easy instrument and you can find help online to teach yourself.

However if you wish to do band in school you'd be better with a for sure instrument to get in. I would highly recommend all woodwinds because they are easier to play I believe than brass instruments, or if you want to learn a brass instrument I suggest trumpet for that's one of the easier ones to play.

Now you don't particularly need lessons for woodwinds like someone else said in fact although I'm taking lessons for my flute which is my main instrument I'm taking them so I can excel to major in it when I get to college. However if you just want to learn the basics I could easily help you learn flute just with a few helpful tips if you email me or something.

I don't know your musical background but some eelementaryschools teach kids either fife or recorder and if so the evolution of those would be clarinet and flute.

So just don't be fooled by people saying some instruments are hard to play, all instruments can be learned if you have the motivations to learn them. :D
References :
expierience

Stay away from any wind instruments if you don't want lessons (winds are flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, trombone ect.) I'd recommend piano.
References :
you could try strings, but they become extremely frustrating after a while. I'd say it'd be best if you learned to play the clarninet or the trumpet. Both are rather easy, and a great alternitive to singing, that's what I did, so I hope this helps! :)

ps don't worry you'll be able to learn how to play within days, and will sound fanatastic in less than a year if you keep practicing
References :
piano player for 9 years
saxophone player for 5
clarinet player for 3
french horn player for a couple weeks
trumpet player for 4 years

The guitar is a pretty good instrument to play. I started playing when I was 15 and you eventually get used to playing to where you can start singing along. It's a fun instrument. I now have six guitars and they're like my babies.
