Piano is probably really good for a 5 year old, but make sure you start at an easy level. Drums can be good, because it isn't that complicated. You can try violin or viola, but that may be a little too hard .

Good Luck and Bravo to your 5 year old for being such a great music player even thought he/she has not started!
References :
Hmmm... How about a Gibson custom Jeff Beck 1954 Les Paul Oxblood aged signed electric guitar - played, numbered, and signed by Jeff Beck himself - with a mahogany body, carved maple top, rosewood fretboard, and aged by the master luthiers at Gibson Custom to look exactly like Beck's original...
References :
I would say the piano. I started learning it about the same age. But of course the drums take no skill at all.
References :
Yes! My friend has 3 young daughters who play the piano and they love it! They are 7, 5, and 3. The younger they are the easier it is for them to learn and the more it benefits them in other areas, such as school. My husband's mother taught him and his siblings the piano when they were younger and they still enjoy it today!
References :
mmm...my roomate's daughter started on drums at 3. Then she started on guitar, then in high school-she is now on trombone, cymbols and is still on drums. If she can, try to get her into piano or any wind instrument she can hold. if you want to read a story on someone exposing music to kids go to my source
References :
http://www99.epinions.com/content_4185497732

Well, they start 3rd graders on violin, flute....5 yo's don't have the comprehension needed (usually!) & schools tend to start all kids off on a recorder in the 2nd gr - never before that.

Sure they let them play w/ instruments but SERIOUSLY - not until 2nd gr.

I would reseach summer programs thru parks & rec - they may have a music class specifically for her age group.
References :
Mom of 5 & 11 yr old

there is a flute-like instrument i cant really think of the name though. i think its called a recorder or something like that. i learned it in 4th grade music class and it was the easiest thing in the world. your kid would definately be able to play it.... that or maybe a piano...
References :
Suzuki cello starts at 3. Don't just start her on an instrument, take her to an orchestra concert or a rock concert and ask her what looks like the coolest instrument. Most kids who are forced to play things (like violin) end up quitting ;)
