How Many Doctors Can Overlook GBS?

In this post we review a report concerning a case regarding a Group B Strep infection. The report indicated that there were 2 physicians involved, each of whom committed substantial errors. The first physician involved was the one who delivered the infant. This doctor either missed or ignored signs that the baby had developed a GBS infection.

The obstetrician also did not communicate the signs to any of the other attending doctors when the infant was transferred to the nursery. To compound the problem, the pediatrician who made rounds at the nursery likewise failed to take any action even though the baby was in respiratory distress.

In only a few hours, the child went into respiratory and cardiac arrest and as a result was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The law firm that represented the family in this matter reported that they were able to achieve a $5.7 Million settlement on behalf of the family.
