What’s an instrument that looks like a pencil sharpener?

I’ve seen this instrument before and it looks like a sharpener. When you turn the handle, it makes a sound like a gear wheel. Can anyone tell me what it’s called?
Hum…
I looked at the pictures but they don’t look right and are probably not the one I’m talking about. The instrument is pretty small, like a size of an old-fashioned school pencil sharpener.

People who played these instruments were called organ grinders.

Yahoo search: "organ grinder" instrument

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organ_grinder Aha! The instrument was called a street organ. Look at both pictures on the page; one is a large fancy instrument, and the other is what I envision when I think of the term "organ grinder."

Is there any instrument to draw ellipse instantaneously like a compass to draw curves or circles?

If major axis and minor axis are given, then with this instrument the ellipse can be drawn.I have designed an instrument where to apply for royalty? Is there any International organization?

Well!!!!!

We already have one…

It is better known as trammel ellipse drawing mechanism. It is one of the inversions of double slider mechanism.

Two perpendicular slots permit two prismatic sliders with a connecting link to oscillate between vertical and horizontal positions though a turning crank in the back.

It is well known that an extension of the connecting rod will trace an exact ellipse. One can also show that the midpoint of the connecting rod generates an exact circle.

What instrument does an astronomer use to determine the spectrum of a star?

1. What instrument does an astronomer use to determine the spectrum of a star?
2. Why is using this instrument better than using only a telescope to view the spectrum?

HELP !!!??
* Best answer.

1. A spectrograph.

2. Because a telescope by itself does not show you the spectrum of the received light. If you attach a colour CCD you will be able to get three very coarse readings over different bands but nothing that could be called a spectrum.

What is the easiest instrument to learn?

I am a natural musician really. I got to grade 6 oboe in no time, and can pick up an instrument and play it to a certain level. But I cant find an instrument that I can master without spending about 1 year on 1 grade! (it has taken longer than 1 year before…)
Any ideas which instrument i might be able to get good enough to just pick up and play?

probably the flute. its an easy instrument to learn. you just have to practice for a little bit and you’ll basically know the fingers for a lot of the notes. at least thats how it was for me.

oh and the recorder

What instrument does the bassoon normally sit next to?

I am switching to the bassoon soon, and i would like to know which instruments does the bassoon normally sit next to? I will be the only bassoon player in my band so, I’m looking for another instrument.

You generally would be sitting to either the tenor or bari sax on one side, with the base clarinets and the clarinets to the other, in the third row of stands
that is how our school sets up

What is the best instrument for carpel tunnel sufferers?

I think I am developing carpel tunnel in my wrist because it become extremely tired (and a little sore) when playing piano. When I try tapping my left and right hand fingers, my left hand cannot keep up with my right at all. So is there another instrument I can play that is easy on the wrist?

I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in both hands, very severe, and I had to give up playing the double keyboard organ, which I dearly loved. I kept looking for another instrument, but guitar didn’t work for me; neither did the Irish penny whistle or even the bodhran (Celtic/Irish drum). But, I found the bowed psaltery at Bristol Renaissance Faire and fell in love. The bow is of lightweight ash, so it’s easy to hold and use. You can place the instrument on your lap or a stand or support it with your other arm, which is what I do. It is so easy to learn, especially if you’ve had prior experience with an instrument such as piano or organ though it’s not lie either of them.

My psaltery is from Unicorn Strings and is so much better than most others of its kind. I’ll place some links for you as I find them. // I found them right away!

You can see someone double-bowing here:

Unicorn Strings’ psalteries sound better than this, but it demonstrates the ease with which they can be played right away:

If you can hum a tune or pick it out on a piano, you surely can play a psaltery. Even on days when my right hand is numb, I generally can play many songs though my left arm can stiffen due to fibromyalgia. People are inevitably fascinated by the sound of this instrument, the "voice" of which varies with the seasons and weather changes, from crystalline to "throaty".

What brand of strings for violin and instrument do you think is the best?

I have played the violin for several years now(renting), so now I want to buy my own instrument. The problem is, I don’t really like the instrument shop near my house. So any suggestion please. Thanks

Go to swstrings.com.

That’s where I got my main violin, as well as bows and most accessories. It’s an amazing place to start out.

I’d recommend you call them, and describe to them your playing abilities and such. That’s what I did; they were able to recommend brands and products to match my needs. Then, they allowed me to test out the violins I liked, sending two at a time, until I fell in love with one.

There’s really no certain brand for anyone. Everyone is different, and everyone needs something different. So, try around, and see what you like. If you try something, and like certain aspects, but dislike certain aspects, tell whatever company you go to about what you do and don’t like, and eventually, they can help to specifically recommend instruments that are exactly what you need.

Personally, I particularly recommend Franz Werner violins — I’ve tested several, and own one; I always like them.

Also feel free to check out sharmusic.com, as well as wwbw.com. Kepharts is also good; I don’t know whethery they’ll ship instruments, but the service is amazing.

Good luck with whatever you pick :]

What is the hardest Instrument to play?

I used to play the violin and the Bassoon and when I decided to play the cello it was hard. For one having to use your thumb to play some notes pass the neck of the cello. Two, the wide range of notes. I wanted to know what is the hardest instrument to play in our opinon?
I know strings can be hard sometimes, but it’s easier then any woodwind or brass instrument. ex. my bassoon, one key can play up to two notes each. and on a string instrument all the notes are all laid out for you, you just have to put your finger in the right spot. One of my favorite sayings, "It’s easy to play a musical instrument: all you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself."- J.S. Bach

Every instrument is difficult. Even the simplest of things like a frame drum or penny whistle can be difficult. But I think one of the most difficult to learn is the uilleann pipes. Liam O’Flynn, one of the great pipers, once said, "The old pipers used to say that it takes twenty-one years to make a piper: seven years of learning, seven years of practicing and seven years of playing." It’s rather accurate.
