Fil-Am Vets Rondalla

Am i too old to learn to play a musical instrument?

I’m 21, i have never had any kind of music lesson and i can’t read music. I was in various choirs throughout school and university but have always wanted to play an instrument.

I know that adults are slower learners, is it worth my time? I don’t expect to be great but i wan to know if i could at least someday be a passable musician. i love violins but I’m guessing they’re pretty hard to learn.

Also (this is kind of a sub question) I’m left handed should i specifically look for left handed lessons?

It’s certainly never too late to start learning.

First step is to decide on an instrument: Piano? Violin? The voice?

Each instrument presents different challenges. The piano, for instance, is easy to learn the basics of, but hard to master. The violin, on the other hand, presents a stiff learning curve to some people from the very beginning. You’ll want to do a bit of preliminary research to decide your focus.

Second step: Decide the level of proficiency you’re aiming for.

Is there a certain piece you want to learn? Is your goal to be able to play for your church, or to sing in a band, or perhaps to have fun with a jazz ensemble? Once you discover your goal, you’re ready to find a teacher who can help you reach it.

Third step: Implement! Consult other musicians in your area to see what instructors come with the highest recommendation. Once you’ve chosen someone to guide you, all you need to do is stick with it, and you’ll be jamming in no time.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Does any one know where someone my age can learn to play an instrument?

I am 19 and since i was in the 7th grade in middle schoo i have had this strong urge to learn to play an instrument but my parents would not let me and i still don’t know why, but i still have that urge and im in a choir at church and have a strong passion for music. does anyone know where i could learn to play an instrument.

Most music stores give lessons, and if they don’t themselves, can direct you to someone that does. Go for it!

If you are in a school band, where did you learn to play your instrument?

Did you have private instructions? At school or somewhere else? Or do you just get taught by the band instructor? When did you start playing? Does the band teacher really know how to play every instrument?

i took private lessons!

Have an instrument you no longer need? I dont care what it is?

I know kids who play instruments in school dont ordinarily play them after they graduate. be honest, are you going to have any more use for it? i am a boy who would like to play any instrument no matter what it is. if you would like to get rid of it, i’ll take it no matter how diffecult to play. if have one, please post it and you can email me and i’ll give you all of my information.
My email is aollerhead5@yahoo.com
i mean if you seriously have one, and would like to give it away. i rather you didnt waste my time.
im asking if your going to donate it to my school. i will set it up because everyones doing seperate fundraising for new instruments. i dont want suggestions on where to buy it!

okay im sorry im ‘waisting your time’ by writing this but i thought id help you out a little.
most people on here are young and know that eventually their instruments are going to be worth something, so dont be expecting a lot.
i try and get instruments too. i play just about everything and i only own 3 instruments, so yup theyre hard to get. luckily i was able to mooch off one of my friends for an old clarinet, but the other two were very expensive and i had to save up (with help from my nice parents) and i bought them. i just rent instruments for a few months and learn to play them.
BUT…
people usually keep their instruments because they think itll be worth something eventually. but then they get old put it in their attic and forget! sooooo, post a flyer or something someplace in your town where there are a lot of old people! theyre very generous and would probably be willing to help you out.
sorry if this wasted your time.

can i play an instrument in the air force?

Not as an afsc, but will I have privacy to be able to play an instrument in my room? Can I bring an instrument when I deploy?

yes you can play in your room and yes you can play tuba there too. My husband is in the band and all of him buddies in the barracks practice there in their rooms. It will depend on the instrument and the branch you are in as to if you can bring it on deployment!

What instrument should i learn to play next?

I already play the Bass Trombone, Trumpet, Flute, Clarinet, and Violin and im in high school. i want to learn how to play another instrument, but im unsure on which.

I would choose one and learn to master it.
I was the same way in school. Before 11th grade I knew the Clarinet, French Horn, Sax, Picoolo/flute, trumpet, violin and upright bass…

I finally settled on the bassoon and it has taken me 15 years and I still have not mastered it. So, for you? based on what you have already played I would pick an instrument that will challenge you and keep you interested. Aparently these aren’t doing it for you.

I would recommend Cello, Oboe, or French Horn.

That should keep you busy.
