I always had the idea that you need to know how to play going into college if you wanted to be involved in any musical activities. I played the viola for three years but had to stop in high school, is there a way where i can start it back up in college? Or learn a new instrument? Guitar? Piano?

Hey there!

Course there is! Most colleges offer lessons, ask the music department for more information. And try to persuade friends into playing with you as this can get you motivated fast!

Most people can’t afford a ‘proper’ piano! And a keyboard is fine to learn the basics, infact I would recommend it.

In learning the piano, you should start by learning notes, then chords and then scales, you can do ALL these on a keyboard no problem!

If your looking for a source to help improve or accelerate your learning, http://www.learn-the-piano.com offer a great online lesson scheme perfect for beginners and will teach you really well, just check out the testimonials!

Good luck and playing is the fastest is way to learn! So get moving

Sam

I can play quite a few! I’ve been playing the piano since I was about 4 (I’m now 28), the violin and viola since I was 11, cello and bass at 12, guitar since 16, learning the drums for about several years now. Music is my passion and I take it very seriously.

i wanna learn how to play an instrument because i love music but im not a good singer i would sing if i had 2 but i would like 2 know how 2 sing and play an instrument so 10 points 4 best answer! thanks
Do you have 2 get lessons 4 guitar cuz i told my mom she said i would need lessons

Guitar you would need lessons however I’m going to learn guitar next year through a high school elective but I don’t think you want to wait till you’re 16 like me.

I would highly recommend piano because it’s a pretty easy instrument and you can find help online to teach yourself.

However if you wish to do band in school you’d be better with a for sure instrument to get in. I would highly recommend all woodwinds because they are easier to play I believe than brass instruments, or if you want to learn a brass instrument I suggest trumpet for that’s one of the easier ones to play.

Now you don’t particularly need lessons for woodwinds like someone else said in fact although I’m taking lessons for my flute which is my main instrument I’m taking them so I can excel to major in it when I get to college. However if you just want to learn the basics I could easily help you learn flute just with a few helpful tips if you email me or something.

I don’t know your musical background but some eelementaryschools teach kids either fife or recorder and if so the evolution of those would be clarinet and flute.

So just don’t be fooled by people saying some instruments are hard to play, all instruments can be learned if you have the motivations to learn them.

They are all fairly easy. Once you know how to play one it is very easy to transition into the other. I think piano would be "easier", espeacially when you get to scales because you just move your fingers up or down the piano. There are no different strings to move to. Like I said they are all very easy.

Well, i play the saxophone very gracefully everyone says that, but when i have to play alone i get really REALLY shy and start shaking i screw up in parts and play really fast and miss a beat!
my band teacher is really understanding when it comes to me since im always shy and quiet plus im the only girl that plays this wonderful instrument! I want to stop getting this feeling! any ideas?
ty
and merry christmas!

The biography of Albert Einstein describes how he felt shy playing violin for an audience. But soon, he lost himself into the wonderful notes that he had thoroughly practised.
Try the proven example. Try to practise well, get lost into music, to simply become ‘unavailable’ to be shy as a ‘person’!

Hey, I’ve been playing bass for about 3 years now.
In terms of knowing scales or other things that are learned from taking lessons I don’t anything about them.
But are they necessary to be in a band or write music?
How much does a person need to know?
Do I have to know how to read music?
Are there any famous musicians who never learned how to "play" their instrument?

Not necessarily. But, being able to read music will come in handy, believe me. Even though I had piano lessons for three months and bailed out because my teacher forbid me of spending my time on writing my own music, I had learned before her. Having a chorus class helped me understand music theory, therefore helping me be able to read music on my own. You can create anything with an instrument without being able to read music, but in the future you might need that skill. If you want to play a song that you haven’t played in awhile and have forgotten, you can go by the music. If you are in a band, (not saying this can’t be done without the sheet music) but if the parts were written out, it would be easier to keep track of your own part and your transitions. It can be done without it, it’s just more concrete and accurate with it.

I think so. At my school talent show, a boy played the piano, and sang, and all the girls at my school went wild. There was also a rock band too, the lead singer/guitarist, and rhythm guitarist now have a fanclub. A girl I know actually CHASED a boy in my band class that plays the saxophone during P.E. Then again, we are talking 7th and 8th grade girls, so I don’t really know.
