bassoon, oboe, clarinet or flute? which instrument to get in a symphony orchestra?
Hi there, I’m working to get in a music school this year, but I’m twenty now and I’ve never played an instrument. I have done a little research on these instruments, but I want to learn that which one has more chance to get me in a local symphony orchestra after a 4 years of practice in school? I heard bassoon may have a little more chance due to its rarity but I don’t know how easy to master it. I appreciate all comments, thanx.
I’m never one to discourage anyone from learning music, but I’m a little uneasy about your ambition to play in a symphony orchestra if you’ve never played an instrument. How do you know you will even like it? Classical music is an extremely competitive field, and there are many, many people out there competing for jobs who have been playing since they were five years old. On the other hand, I have heard of some extremely gifted people who mastered an instrument up to professional level in just a few years, but that is very, very rare.
Of the four you mention, from the most to the least competitive are : flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon. So, yes, bassoon puts you at a huge advantage on the job market.
But a bassoon is expensive to buy, very difficult to master as a first instrument, and requires that you learn how to make your own reeds–as does oboe. If you don’t really, really enjoy working on finely-detailed projects with your hands, neither oboe nor bassoon are right for you, no matter how musically gifted you are.
Despite all this, the most important factor in choosing an instrument has to be how you feel about it. You have to like the sound, and you also have to love how it feels to play it. It has to feel good in your hands and in your mouth. To play really well you have to feel as if the instrument is really a part of you, which will only happen if you feel passionately about it.
In order to do well, you will have to practice many, many hours a day, at least four, preferably more. There’s no way you can do that for years on end if you don’t absolutely love it.
Best of luck.

What is an easy instrument for a 25 year old to learn?
I want to learn to play an instrument, preferably not too expensive and preferably small. I have some musical background, and was thinking of a wind instrument like an oboe or a flute. But something obscure would be cool too. Any suggestions?
Flute, clarinet, and saxophone are wind instruments that are not particularly hard to learn to play. I recommend picking up a beginning method book (used by sixth graders) to learn fingerings and such. It would be better to find a private instructor or someone who plays the instrument to help you, but those books will work, too.

Do you or someone you know have a musical instrument?
I have a band in a remote area in Haiti. We are in need for instruments. We need trumpets, clarinets, flutes, saxes, tubas. If you or someone you know have one, please help us by donating it. Your gesture will mean a lot to these young people. It will make a huge difference .
Thank you,
Ernie

What instrument is played in this song?
Jars of Clay play a song called Love Song For a Savior. There is a flute type of instrument used. Does anyone know what it is? A recorder, piccolo, panflute? It’s beautiful. Thanks.
Sound like a piccolo to me.
Answer mine?

Is the flute a good instrument?
I play the clarinet and want to take up the flute. The only thing I am concerned about is the sound. Some kids in my class who play the flute make airy or shrill sounds but when played correctly, can the flute make a beautiful, peaceful sound?
‘Ever heard the expression, the Flute of God?
Why the flute, one might ask? ‘Because the flute is of the woodwind sound, one of among the most natural of sounds that can be fabricated by human beings. The woodwind is the sound or voice closest to that of the human voice, which, I might add, is the highest of the musical instruments.
Indeed, the flute is an instrument bearing a most eloquent, candy-like sound, soft and soothing, even haunting; and as quickly can produce a sound that is stark and cold, raw, powerful. It is Voice — the Flute of God.
Your classmates have not yet learned to focus the wind through the instrument yet, in which the atoms of sound are dispersed and not afforded the whole, laser-like focus that is needed. The flute in its many forms is completely hollow — yet it is not!
The trick or rather, the mastery rests with sending forth a central beam of winds or air from the start point of the flute to the end point such that the keys or ‘key’ (pitch) openings can siphon from that column of concentrated sound and wind. And this takes time; to develop the musculature of the mouth and cheeks and lips, concentration, and all.
Its sound is indeed its chief feature, loved in virtually all genres of music, and along with the lute (similar to our guitars) is a form used by musicians who lived their entire lives in the wilds — in woodlands and forests, in mountain fastnesses, and in deserts and caves. It is a most mystical and melodious instrument.

Which instrument should I take next?
I am thinking about taking up another instrument. I already play the flute and the saxophone. I want a intrument that is not in the sax or flute family. I want a wind instrument, and I don’t want a tuba, or the kazoo. any other one should be fine.
Why not get really good at one instrument? I did what you are doing of learning all these instruments. Sure, I can play nearly 10 different instruments to a mediocre level, but am I really great at just one of them? Of course not, because I didn’t focus on it. I understand it is fun to be able to learn and play something new, but if you want to play music in college and as a career, focus on one instrument and become as good as possible. Then you can add other instruments after that.
