How do you fit playing an instrument into your schedule?

I really want to play the guitar..lessons once a week, practice every day. But I’m going into my junior year of high school, complete with AP classes and sports practice every day in fall and spring, and I’m just not sure I can fit it in. How do those of you who already play instruments do it?

Make a date with your instrument and keep it. You won’t begin to see the benefits until you’ve been doing it for awhile, but taking up the discipline of an instrument literally opens up new areas in your brain and allows you to establish new synapses, as well as prioritize information that you already know.

When you get home, simply take the guitar out of the case and play it every chance you get. If you just practice during the commercials of a one hour television show, (that’s what the mute button is for) you will get over a half hour in. But don’t take my word for it. Several of your friends are doing it already. Ask them how they do it. some of them are already taking lessons from the same teacher you are thinking about taking lessons from! Most of them are honors students, and most of them already know what you are just finding out now. Congratulations and welcome to the club!

What instruments, other than a piano, you can play a full song?

You know; play a entire sheet music with a piano. Can you do this with other instruments? Possibly organ, other keyboard instruments. But what about other instruments. How about a harp?

I play the drums. Drummers don’t need sheet music.

I’m under 18 and I would like to start to teach an instrument. Help please?

I’m trying to raise money for some new band Equipment and I need a job. I want to teach but I’m not sure how to, it might be illegal. I’m very good at playing the drums and guitar. Please help? Thank you!

It is not illegal. One of my students got hired to "tutor/teach" a middle school student in computer science. I was contacted by the parents of the student and I told them I was sorry but I didn’t have the time but I could recommend one of my very good students. I talked to my student and he asked me what he should charge. I told him I charge $25.00 an hour and I suggest you do too. He got the job!

During my recent visit to different parts of South India I found wonderful stone sculptures, murals, caves, temples etc. I am interested to exchange views and knowledge about origin of tools used & technology deployed. I am also interested to know role of trade & traders to introduce developed implements / instruments in the society that affected culture of & economic anthropology of the society.

There was a HUGE group of them– in India!!!

Why did you wait to get home to discuss all of this?

What’s the cheapest instrument I can rent?

Ok, I already play flute in a parade band, my school band, and an Allstar band. I have been planning on taking up another instrument, and self – teaching myself. I kind of wanted to get a trumpet but i’m not sure how much that would cost. I know a flute is the cheapest, but when what instrument other than a flute is cheapest. I am not talking about brands.
Thank you so much!
-Linz

Go to a local music store and check the prices… another good option is to seeif you can pick up another instrument in band class, like keyboard or something…that’s what I did.

I need a root canal and my wisom teeth removed, can it be done at once?

My wisdom teeth have not begun to grow in, but last year, my dentist told me that by looking at my X-Rays, they were going to give me trouble and said I had about 2 years to get them removed until they started breaking through my gums.

Long story short, I had a filling. It was too big and made chewing god awful. I chipped it (flossing no less) a while back after a root canal. I didn’t have a crown over it because it was $300 (and my mom didn’t have $300 to spare. She was in the hospital earlier in the year and fell behind on bills. I’m 16 BTW). It did have something in the inside though (duh). So, I need to get it drilled down and my crown put on( I also need a replacement. I had a crown on another tooth years ago, but the first time I touch candy in months and it pulls the sucker right off)

Anways, I am so terrified of the dentist I can’t walk in there without shaking. The smell, the sharp instruments, the chair and people playing around in my mouth. I get it sounds foolish, but I’m freaking out just thinking about it.

I was thinking of getting them done soon (get a day or two off school. lol) but I’d love to get everything done at once so I can have 5 months and 3 weeks of peace. Also, when I get my wisdom teeth removed, would I have to go to an oral surgeon since they haven’t grown in? And, would they put me to sleep? I don’t think I’d make it if they didnt’t!

I’ve always had dental issues even as a small child. I had something called bottle mouth and it sent me on a path to hell (I’m a bit dramatic). My doctor also said something about not getting enough calcium since I’m lactose intolerant. I brush 3 times a day and floss all the time.

No….usually different doctors doing the procedures…plus that is waay too much work to be done at once in an office setting

Which is the best musical instrument for a beginner who has no previous music experience?

I plan to learn a musical instrument. I have no previous music experience. Which instrument should I start with – Piano, violin, guitar?

Assuming that you are going to be taught in private lessons by a qualified teacher, you can choose any instrument that you’d like.

Some info on the instruments you mentioned, plus a few more:
Piano is not that difficult to begin with, and you can quickly learn to play a good number of tunes with which you would be familiar. How hard it gets is dependent on how much you want to work at it. You can play any style of music on it. I feel that this is the instrument that gives you the most knowledge of music theory in a short amount of time, therefore you can translate your knowledge to other instruments more quickly.

Guitar is also fairly easy, and you will be learning music theory fairly quickly. Possibly as quickly as piano, but this depends on your teacher. You can play any style of music on it. If you really want to learn, you should take lessons in CLASSICAL guitar, from a teacher that is highly trained in it. Classical is the basic foundation for all guitar playing. You will be able play the pop/rock stuff easily on your own after you learn in the classical style. You will not be able to use any old guitar for classical (string textures and their attachment to the guitar are different), so find a teacher before purchasing a guitar so that they can advise you on what to buy. The good news is that they are inexpensive compared to some other instruments.

Violin is a very traditional instrument, and is versitile in the fact that you can play classical music, contemporary music (think the orchestra in "I don’t want to miss a thing" by Aerosmith), or country/bluegrass music (called fiddle when you play in this style). Contact a teacher before you buy your violin. There are many different companies that make violins, and some are great while others are downright crummy. Also, depending on your age and size, you may not need a full size violin yet. They can help you determine which size to get. Downside: solo instrument. If you want accompaniment, someone else must do that for you. Don’t neglect the other string instruments: viola, cello (my favorite), and sting bass.

Woodwind instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon. All require as much finger dexterity as piano and guitar, as well as being able to do certain things with your mouth. Instruments that are not played as commonly, like bassoon, will get you college scholarships more quickly than more common ones like flute and clarinet. You can play in school bands and marching band (which is very fun).

Brass Instruments: trumpet, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba. These require less finger dexterity, but more dexterity with your mouth. Baritone/euphonium and especially tuba are good for scholarships. You can play in school bands and marching band (which is very fun), as well as Drum and Bugle Corps (which is even more fun).

Percussion: aka drums. If you are going to learn drums, learn it the real way and learn to play the percussion keyboards (bells, marimba, xylophone, etc) as well. You can’t get into college playing the drums alone, you must learn the rest.

Above all, you should play what interests you the most!

What Musical Instrument Should I Learn to Play?

I’m thirteen years old, and want to play an instrument, but I’m not sure which to pick. I’m looking for advice on what to play, and, if possible, why I should pick that particular instrument.

I don’t want to choose an instrument that lots of people play, and I don’t particularly want to choose a string instrument.

I have taken both piano and violin lessons before, but found that these instruments are not really ‘me.’

Thank you in advance!

There are many different instruments out there. I play bassoon in the 8th grade band and the clarinet and saxophone on the side. Woodwinds sound prettier than brass but if you want to sound powerful go with a brass instrument. Or you could just stick with piano.
