Fil-Am Vets Rondalla
What all do you need as far as equipment, before you start gigging?
I obviously know you need all the instruments, but are there anything you need as far as live sound goes?
Well it depends where you are playing, some places will provide mics and stuff.
But you need pedals, amps, mics, lots of spare cords.

hod instrument?
about the history of hod instrument
I’m not sure if this is what you are asking about. In English, a "hod" is a tool that is used by masons – workers who build using stone and bricks. The hod is used to carry the mortar – the cement – that is used to stick the bricks together.
100 years ago before we had modern equipment, a hod was made from two flat pieces of wood, stuck together to form a trough or carrier. A long handle was attached.
The worker would put a shovelfull of wet cement on the hod, put the hod on his shoulder and climb up a ladder to the level where the other workers were putting the bricks into the new wall.
This was really hard work. The cement was heavy and you had to climb a ladder carrying it over your shoulder. But you didnt need a lot of training to learn to do it. So, in the early days of the USA, back in the 1800s, most of the men who "carried a hod" were immigrants who were ignorant, often didnt speak English or have any job skills. It was a very low status job.

Preciousp: a question about Ameriplan?
You wrote: "Recently I went to dentist and had x-rays, teeth cleaning and some polishing, my total bill came out to $197 but I only paid $59…"
If this is true (and I highly doubt it is) this dentist paid YOU to come in. Hygienists earn between $36 and $45 an hour, an exam by the doctor costs the practice, instruments had to be sterilized (I hope), x-ray film used and developed. If your visit lasted an hour – as any decent checkup should – the cost to the practice was at least $175 and probably more like $250.
What dentist would accept $59, when it costs them more than that to have you in their chair?
Although I do not agree with this concept, as you well know, some "plans" arrange a deal with the dentist to accept below cost on the cleaning, x-ray and examination visit. The plans do this on the premise that it is worth it to the dentist to get the hot prospect into the office so you can find stuff to make money on. It’s like the "free brake inspection" at Midas. They do it for free, hoping to find out that you need new brakes. And, by the way, did you see that hole in the front end of your catalytic converter???

What would be a good musical instrument for a novice muscician?
Well, I tried playing instruments in the past as a youth but got bored easily and quit. Now that I’m an adult with more patience and self discipline, I think I could successfully learn to play an instrument. Only thing I’m not sure about would be which one would be good for me.
A six string acoustic guitar. Here’s why.
An acoustic guitar is relatively cheap. You can get a new, decent one for under $200.00. You can do even better buying used.
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/navigation/6-string-acoustic-electric-guitars?N=100001+304308&Ns=P_Price%7c0&rpp=20
An acoustic guitar is easy to play. You learn a few chords and you can then play hundreds of songs.
You don’t need anything else like an amp. An acoustic guitar is loud enough on it’s own.
An acoustic guitar is light and portable. You can take it to the beach or camping and amaze and entertain your friends.
You can sing and play at the same time. Try doing that with a saxophone.
The only other instument that fits all these requirement is the accordian. As the guitar is infinately cooler than the accordian, I suggest leaning to play that.

What is the best instrument a 5 year old can learn to play at this age?
I would like for my child to learn how to play an instrument now that she is out of school. Is it possible at her young age?
I recommend waiting until she is 7 years old, then enter her into piano lessons. She’ll gain more practice that way, all the while without forcing it onto her. And the piano is an excellent start.

What instruments can you play? If not which instrument do you wish you can learn?
What instruments can you play? If you don’t play any, which one would you like to play? As for me I am a good singer, I am a baritone. I can play the guitar, both acoustic and electric. I can play the upright base. And a few songs on a harp.
I wish I knew how to play the piano and violin. However, when I was younger these lessons were too expensive for me. My girlfriend can play the piano quite well.
I feel bad for Urbanian for the bagpipe thing. I play the Scottish bagpipes and have been at them for about six years. I played the flute for eight years very well, but have lost touch with it. I’m currently in a bagpipe band and we do Scottish festivals and things like that. It’s a lot of fun. I wish I knew how to play the guitar and the piano. I have a really old guitar and I started to take lessons for guitar and piano with my best friend but it didn’t last long because she plays the bagpipes too and we would end up just wanting to learn more songs on the bagpipes. Lol. Music is the best. I hope I can always play an instrument.

Where and how to get recoding equipment to record me singing and put music to it?!?
I write songs and I want to record them myself, but I also want to put music to it. The problem is I don’t play any instruments but I know how I want it to sound? Is there anything I could use to do it?? and what type of recording equipment would I need and from where…roughly how much money? I know there’s a lot if questions but if you could help me with any of them I would appreciate it a lot. Thank you!
Well your best bet would be to use a Virtual Synth program such as Reason. Then use a MIDI Keyboard controller to play the instruments, and also use the sequencer tools to perfect it.
So here’s how Reason works. You have over 1,000 instruments in the arsenal to choose from. You load up the instrument, then use your Keyboard to start out some type of melody. Now, I know you can’t play, so it’s not going to sound great, but you pluck a few notes for your start. Then you go to the MIDI Sync button and it will automatically synch the notes you hit, into the closest time slot, to make everything in time. Then you can use thte Editor in the sequencer to add notes and edit notes with the Mouse. See, so it’s kind of like pasting in notes where you want them. You can do this for guitar, drums, piano, flute, violin, etc. It’s really a cool program.
It’s either that, or you find a band.
Reason is $400, a MIDI Keyboard is about $250, you’ll need a mic to sing into about $100, and you’d need an Audio Interface to tie everything together and that’s about $200. So just under $1,000 to get it all.
Reason – $400

Axiom 61 Keyboard – $300

Does listening to music improve your musical abilities, with the same instrument?
I’ve heard on some web sites and from my family that, since I am learning guitar right now, it helps to listen to some of the great guitarists in history. But does this really help? Also if it does help, then how?
After learning about the guitar a bit, then hearing some stuff you play played in a more complex manner, you may begin to see the underlying patterns that certain styles are built around.
Four chord patterns like G C D G, or A D E A.
The E B A rock n roll style.
Etc.

is the flute an easy instrument to play?
im gonna play the flute for music class ![]()
Is it actually a simple instrument to play? I am terrible at music but i relly am fascinated into learning to play an instrument. ![]()
i guess my answer may put you off, but i have to say in my honest opinion that no musical instruments are easy to learn (ok maybe not recorder, that’s not too hard) for all wind instruments we need to form what we call an embouchure (mouth shape) to play the instrument. this embouchure takes times to form, and can actually be categorized into 3 main categories for band: flute air-reed embouchure, buzzing embouchure for all brasses, and single and double reeds for the rest of the woodwinds. for flute’s air-reed embouchure, it’s actually quite challenging to learn to form the teacher without a professional to guide you along. i’ve experienced that myself and regrettably wasted 2 years when i didnt have someone good to teach me. try to get a proficient player from your school band to teach/advise you or even the band instructor to do so. that way you’ll have an easier time trying to learn.one more thing is musicality (ability to read and perform scores) this is real challenge when learning music, i understand you claim to be terrible at music, the theory at first might kill you but after a while, after getting used to it, you’ll start finding it easier and easier and more joy when playing. have fun!
