Can anyone tell me the history of the instrument called a viola?

Here are links and snippets

VIOLA s are cool!!

http://www.soundjunction.org/theviolaabriefhistory.aspa?NodeID=1
""THE VIOLA dates from the same time as the violin, coming into existence in the early to middle 16th century (certainly not later than around 1530).

At first the viola was called the ‘alto-tenor’ violin, as the term ‘viola’ was used to refer to any Western classical stringed instrument that was bowed. But eventually the word ‘viola’ came to refer specifically to the viola da braccia (meaning the viola played in the arms), hence the German word bratsche that is still used for the viola today.

Acoustically the viola has a problem. To get the best sound from the lowest notes, an ideal viola would have to be so long (from the tip of the neck to the bottom of the belly) that it would be almost impossible to play. Around about the 17th century some ‘tenor-violas’ were made which were very long, but this type of viola was rarely played, although some examples survive.

In the late 18th century the viola emerged from being the instrument which just ‘filled in’ in the middle of an ensemble. Some composers even began to write concertos for it. This increasing prominence led to experiments to try and improve the viola, but it wasn’t really until the 20th century that the most successful steps forward were made. The main mover in the viola’s development was the viola-player Lionel Tertis who collaborated with the instrument-maker Arthur Richardson from about 1937 to try to create the ideal viola""

http://www.viola-in-music.com/history-of-the-viola.html
""The history of the viola and the history of the violin and the so-called “violin family”, have been closely related. In the history of classical music the viola, although neglected in many aspects, has played quite an important role, recognised by several composers and authors of treatises. A bit like salt in a meal: it’s not the main ingredient but it’s indispensable.

Actually, the viola has been the Cinderella of the family until the last century, before Lionel Tertis came to its rescue, as he pointed out in his books “Cinderella no more”.

The viola and violin family developed sometime around 1500 in Italy from previous bowed instruments. The shape of viola and violin as it is today was not invented but was rather the result of an evolution of various forms, by different craftsmen. There are paintings and other documentation of that time proofing that makers were experimenting with various shapes and sizes of bowed instruments.
Early instruments
The most astounding documentary example is the one you can see in the dome of the Santuario di Saronno in north Italy, not far from Milan. If you ever find yourself around there, I recommend you to go for a trip and visit that church, even better if you can go there for a concert. I find that the location adds a lot to the fascination of a concert, both for the listeners and for the performers. I did play there once and I think it contributed to make me enjoy the concert more.
It is a fresco with a huge concert of angels in the heaven playing all sorts of instruments. Some of these instruments have the characteristics that will differentiate the violin family from other bowed instruments, such as 4 strings, f holes, a scroll.
Anyway, the first ones to make violins with the present shape were most certainly Andrea Amati (born between 1500 and 1511) and Gasparo da Salò (born around 1540) and instruments made by them survive and are played.

Did the viola come before the violin?
It’s not very clear whether the history of the viola originated slighly before that of the violin and cello or not. It is most likely that all the different sizes of instruments were developed at the same time from older bowed instruments till the makers found what they considered the ideal model.
A strong argument supporting the theory that violas came first has to do with the origin of instruments names.

The term viola was used in Italy for all this types of instruments. The other names of the violin family instruments derive from it:

viol+ino (diminutive), which means small viola, the soprano viola
viol+one (augmentative), which means big viola, the bass viola
viol+on +cello (smaller than violone), which means smaller bass viola.
Since the alto-tenor member (the viola) of the family has kept the original name, this may mean that it was the first one to be created. This theory has some logic although it’s not a proof.
Anyway, it’s nice to know that in a way the viola was the origin of the family, if only for the instruments names.

Violas sizes and famous makers
Often the string instruments were used to double the singers, the violin doubling the soprano part, the cello doubling the bass part and therefore the middle voices of alto and tenor were given to violas.
Andrea Amati was one of the first luthiers to make violas, small and large ones. Amati was so famous in his time that in 1565 king Charles IX of France from Paris commissioned him 38 instruments (violins, violas and cellos) for his musicians. Most of those masterpieces were destroyed during the French revolution but one viola survived and you can see it at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. It is of the big type with a body length of 47 cm. ———————————————————————""

Which instrument is better to start out with?

I am going into middle school and I know for sure I want to do band. I tried the instruments and I was good at euphonium and flute. The lady said I was a natural at flute but I am not sure I have a lot of air. My sister is a trumpet so I know how to play brass. I love the sound of the euphonium but 2 of my friends are going to do flute. Which instrument should I do?

You’ll need more air for euphonium than you will for flute :)

There will ALWAYS be lots of flute players wherever you go no matter what concert band you’re in… but bands always seem to have a shortage of baritone/euphonium players… For example, my college symphony band has like 7 flutes and only one euphonium :(

Personally, I love the sound of the euphonium too, one of my favorites next to the french horn.

Good luck!

The point of this paragraph about myself is to use the verbs:

* Faire = de la, du, de l’ , des + activity
* Jouer = de la, du,des de l’ + music instrument.

I want to join as a production engineer in a X-Ray (Medical Equipments )Manufacturing Industry?

My Qualification is B.E. Instrument Engineering.
What is the minimum Experience required to join as a production engineer in a Medical Equipment Manufacturing Industry?

You might want to check out the website for the RSNA (Radiological Society of North America). We have our medical conference every year in Chicago, usually the end of November or beginning of December. All manufactures are represented there. This will be my 32nd year in attending the RSNA and there are always new manufacturers setting up booths there. It’s held at the McCormick Place in Chicago.

How to build an instrument for physics class?

I have to build an musical instrument and play a recognizable song in front of the class on it. The instrument has to be able to play an octave, and be tuned. (So, no percussion instruments like a drum.) Does anyone have any good ideas? I’m looking for something easy to construct, since I really am not good at difficult projects that involving building things. Any good websites with instructions for constructing the instrument would be very helpful!

a) A cigar box guitar.
b) A PVC recorder
c) PVC pan pipes (probably the easiest)

Do guys like girls that play an instrument or do they think its dorky?

My friends play instruments in the community band and thye wanted to know if that makes them look dordy but idk.

She might show the other members a thing or two. That is what they are afraid of her. A true musician looks at the talent and not body features or gender. She might look a little odd in a male quartet.

How do I get multiple instruments to play on the Mac garageband program?

I want to play multiple instruments simotaneously in the garageband program on my Mac. It starts with a piano, but when I select a different instrument, it replaces the piano instead of playing side by side with the piano. My question is how do get multiple instruments to play at the same time?

You have to add a new track. In the menu bar, select Track > New Track.
